I recently came across a question in the Office 365 Forums asking how one can set the Language and Time Zone for all users in Office 365.

For this we need to use the Set-MailboxRegionalConfiguration cmdlet in PowerShell. Once we’ve connected to Office 365 using Powershell, we only need to run one cmdlet.

get-mailbox | Set-MailboxRegionalConfiguration -Language -TimeZone

The Language ID is a number that corresponds to the correct language type. The following table shows you which number corresponds to which language.

  • Hi, does the command works for Office 365 Wave 15?

  • Just wanted to let anyone whose getting an error for the timezone when using S.A or A.U.S, basically anything with a period, the period needs to be removed, SA or AUS etc…

thanks alot for the Script though ^___^

    • many thanks, it killed me for too long!

  • […] Set Language and Time Zone for all OWA users in Office 365 […]

  • Rayomnd is a champ!
The “A.U.S Eastern Standard Time” is wrong and you need to remove the “.” from it.

  • Great article with all the info I need but…Get-Mailbox gives me “The term Get-mailbox is not recognised as a cmdlet”

  • As a reply to boledylocks:
If you didn’t run Windows PowerShell as admin, you get this error. Execute as admin and it should work fine.
Another reason might be that you are using Windows Azure.

On another note, everthing executes alright for me and looking at MS docs on the subject, these seem correct, however, it doesn’t always seem to work and sometimes it works for some seats, but not all…

I believe it doesn’t work well in case you added the users using bulk import, since it sets the password as temporary and you still need to log in to the portal for the first time with said users.

  • @boledylocks:

It’s been a while but for future people who would like to proceed, before the connection to MSOLService, you have to follow those steps before :

With this, you’ll import the module for Powershell cmdlets to use Exchange Online commands. Then you’ll have get-mailbox command and so on.

    Enjoy !

  • Hi, is it possible to choose timezone and let user choose language? Or it’s both or nothing?

    • You can change either or both.

  • Hello, is this setting the default for all mailboxes and future mailboxes ?
So when users are migrated to O365 they wont get bothered with the message?

I set this the other day thinking it would do that but have found out new users migrated are still getting asked the question.

    • I’m also wondering if this just sets it for current mailboxes and also future mailboxes yet to be migrated? We’re only migrating small groups of users at a time and some of them aren’t picking their timezone/language at all or not correctly causing calendar issues. Anyway, would be good if there was a global switch to set a default timezone/language for existing and future users.

  • For USA English and Pacific Standard Time, I used this:
    get-mailbox | Set-MailboxRegionalConfiguration -Language 1033 -TimeZone “Pacific Standard Time”
And it worked! Thank you So Much!!!

  • Hi! We have a problem in our offie365 installation at school where all the menus in the online programs (word, powerpoint etc) are in English. We want the menu to be in Norwegian. Under the language and time zone settings, only “we are working on it …” and I can not get the link. All other text in the office365 installation is in Norwegian. I have run the power shell command you describe. I get no error messages, but the menus are still in English. This issue applies to all users (students and teachers). MS support has not yet managed to solve the problem. Do you know what might be wrong?

  • The command is sucessfully done when I do Get-MailboxRegionalConfiguration afterward but when i log the user in owa it still ask for the timezone and language and if i setup an outlook before doing that the folder are still in english.

After i’ve setup the language directly in the owa the Get-MailboxRegionalConfiguration give my the same result. Looks like they changed where we can configure this…

    • Look like we need to add -LocalizeDefaultFolderName:$true to skip the language prompt on the OWA

      get-mailbox | Set-MailboxRegionalConfiguration -LocalizeDefaultFolderName:$true -Language 3084 -TimeZone “Eastern Standard Time”
